For life, for opportunity,
For friendship and fellowship,
We thank thee, O Lord. Amen.
Lost Pines Grace
by Matthew Rivera and "Mr. C.", 1993For the opportunity to serve others,
For the fellowship of friends,
Thank you for bringing us together, O Lord
And for guiding us with your hand. Amen.
Prayers Before Eating
by Walter Dudley CavertDear Father, we thank you for this food.
May it give us strength to help other people.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
Grant, O God, that this food may keep us physically strong;
May the inspiration of our friends keep us mentally awake; and
May the desire to do your will keep us morally straight.
For Christ's sake, Amen.
All good things come from you, O God.
You have given us our food, our friends, and all our blessings.
Give us one thing more -- a grateful heart. Amen.
Giver of every good gift,
We thank you for our daily food and for the strength it gives our bodies.
Make us willing to share our blessings with other people.
For Jesus' sake, Amen.
Scouting Prayers
On My Honor
by Walter Dudley CavertDear Heavenly Father, help me to make honor the watchword of my life. Above everything else may I place the integrity of my own soul. Teach me that character is my most priceless possession.
As I wear my Scout badge, may it remind me that I have taken a vow to be a person of honor. Give me strength to be true to my promise.
Lift my life above all sham and make-believe. Give me a steadfast loyalty to the highest and best that I know. May I have the courage to stand for what I believe to be right in your sight, no matter what others may say or do. Keep me from violating my honor or selling my soul.
May the example of Jesus be my guide. Help me to remember that he cared more for your approval than for the praise or blame of men. In Christ's name, Amen.
My Duty to God
by Walter Dudley CavertAbove all other duties, O God, may I place my duty to you. Make me willing to put you first in my life. May I seek to do your will instead of my own. May nothing be able to turn me aside from what I believe to be right in your sight.
Give me faith that you have a plan for your world and for each person in it. Help me to discover your purpose for my life. Then make me glad to follow it.
Each day may I seek the guidance of your Holy Spirit. Open my mind to your truth. Fill my heart with your love. Make my will steadfast to obey you. May my hands and my feet be ready to serve you.
If I do wrong, may I be sincerely sorry. Give me the courage to ask your forgiveness. Teach me to depend more on your strength and less on my own. For Christ's sake, Amen.
A Scout is Reverent
by Walter Dudley CavertGrant, O God, that I may remember my Creator in the days of my youth. Each morning may I seek your guidance. Each evening may I ask for your blessing. Through the day may I have you as my companion and guide.
Make me faithful in my duty to you. Through prayer and the study of the Bible, lead me into an understanding of your will. Make me glad to go to church to worship you. In my daily life, may I show my love for you by loving my fellow men.
May I be grateful for the privilege of living in a country where each person is free to worship according to his own conscience. Give me respect for those whose religion is different from mine. While I maintain a steadfast loyalty to my own church, may I defend the rights of others to worship as they please. Grant that religious freedom may never mean religious neglect.
Take my life into your keeping and make me a worthy follower of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Thanks for Scouting
adapted from an original written by Walter Dudley CavertWe are thankful for the life of General Robert Baden-Powell and his work in starting the Scouting movement. We are grateful that Scouting has given millions of youth a vision of what life at its best can mean.
Grant blessings to all Scouts around the world and help them to be true to the Scout Oath and Law.
Increase the number of adults who offer their lives as Scout leaders. Let no one who wishes to be a member of Scouting miss the opportunity to join.
Grant that Scouting may help to raise up in our world generations of citizens who will live by standards of honor and duty. May they be able to save humanity from hate and greed, and lay the foundations for a world in which all people are held to be brothers or sisters. In the name of the Master of All Scouts, Amen.

Other Prayers
A Prayer For Right Conduct
by William De Witt HydeGive us clean hands, clean words and clean thoughts, O God.
Help us to stand for the hard right against the easy wrong.
Save us from habits that would harm.
Teach us to work as hard and play as fair in your sight alone as if all the world saw.
Forgive us when we are unkind, and help us to forgive those who are unkind to us.
Keep us ready to help others at some cost to ourselves.
Send us chances to do a little good every day, and so to grow more like Christ.
A Prayer to the Great Spirit
by Tom WhitecloudO Father, whose voice I hear in the winds and whose breath gives life to all the world, hear me.
I am a man before you, one of your many children.
I am small and weak.
I need your strength and wisdom.
Let me walk in beauty and make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunsets.
Make my hands respect the things you have made, my ears sharp to hear your voice.
Make me wise so that I may know the things you have taught my people -- the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock.
I seek strength, Father, not to be superior to my brothers, but to be able to fight my worst enemy, myself.
Make me ever ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eye, so that when life fades as the fading sunset, my spirit may come to you without shame.
Amen.
Saint Francis' Prayer
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.
A Knight's Prayer
from Chester CathedralMy Lord,
I am ready on the threshold of this new day
to go forth armed with your power,
seeking adventure on the high road,
to right wrong,
to overcome evil,
to suffer wounds and
endure pain if need be,
but in all things to serve you
bravely, faithfully, joyfully
that at the end of the day's labor,
kneeling for your blessing,
you may find no blot upon my shield.
Amen.
A Prayer of Thanks
by Ralph Waldo EmersonFor each new morning with its light,
Father, we thank you,
For rest and shelter of the night,
Father, we thank you,
For health and food, for love and friends,
For everything your goodness sends,
Father, in heaven, we thank you.
A Navajo Prayer
Lord of the mountain,
Hear a young man's prayer,
Hear a prayer for cleanness,
Keeper of the strong rain
Drumming on the mountain
Lord of the small rain
That restores the earth in newness,
Keeper of the clean rain,
Hear a prayer for wholeness.
Keeper of the paths of men,
Hear a prayer for straightness,
Hear a prayer for courage.
Lord of the thin peak,
Keeper of the headlands,
Keeper of the strong rocks,
Hear a prayer for staunchness,
O Lord and spirit of the mountain.
Hymn to the Sun
by St. Francis of AssisiPraise my Lord God with all His creatures; and
specially our brother the sun,
who brings us the day.Praise my Lord for our sister the moon, and for the stars,
that He has set clear and lovely in the heavens.Praise my Lord for our brother the wind, and
for air and cloud,
calms and all weather,
that supports life in all creatures.Praise my Lord for our brother fire,
that gives us light in the darkness.Praise my Lord for our mother the earth,
that sustains us and keeps us and
grows many fruits, and flowers of many colors, and grass.Praise my Lord for all those who
pardon one another for His love's sake, and
who endure weakness and tribulation;
blessed are they who peaceably shall endure,
for He, the most High, shall give them a crown. Amen.
Four Winds Blessing
O Great Spirit,
Bless us from the north with the cool winds that calm our passions.
Bless us from the east with the winds that bring and renew life.
Bless us from the south with the warm wet winds that invite growth.
Bless us from the west with the winds that lead us through this life to the next.
Fill the sky so that we might sense your presence.
And bless us from mother earth from which we've come and to whom we shall return.
An Irish Blessing
May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm on your face,
And rains fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.
Amen.Last updated: August 5, 1997
